THE HISTORY ABOUT GENERAL ELECTRIC COMPANY .
General Electric dates from 1878, when the
Edison Electric Light Company was formed to support the research of American
inventor Thomas Edison, who received a patent two years later for the first
practical incandescent lamp. Edison Electric purchased the Sprague Electric
Railway and Motor Company in 1889, forming the Edison General Electric Company.
GE was founded in 1892 through the merger of Edison General Electric and
Thomas-Houston company, which held other important patents on electrical
systems. Thomas Edison was on GE’s board of directors until 1894.
In its early years GE developed and manufactured
the technology that introduced electric power to the United States on a wide scale.
Early GE products included electric motors and generators, transmission
equipment, light bulbs, and electric locomotives for public transportation. In
1900 the company established a research laboratory in Schenectady , New York ,
that earned numerous patents. GE’s earliest innovations included the tungsten
filament light bulb, X-ray tubes (see X Ray), high-speed steam turbines, and
the electric toaster.
